Organic Matter in the Soil

Lavender and Poppies

Corn

Lorraine, a PhD candidate at a local university has been taking soil samples from our garden for her research.

Her research is ongoing, but today, she sent me this info:

"What I can tell you is that the soil seems to be lacking in organic matter (the soil outside your garden has more organic matter than that in your plots) so you should work in more compost and mulch, and that all of the soils have a neutral pH. Neutral is best for plant uptake of minerals."

Great information. If you want more organic matter, make sure to work in lots of compost.

See you all at the meeting on June 12th at 10am.

Meeting Recap

Sorry we missed you at the last meeting of the Crenshaw Community Garden!

The next meeting is on January 10th at 10am. This meeting is mandatory if you want to continue gardening in 2009.

The January meeting will begin with the election of new officers. We will be distributing new plots (there seem to be about four) and collecting contracts and dues from gardeners.

All gardeners must come with their signed contract, a $35 check made out to The Crenshaw Community Garden and $5 cash for new keys.

The 2009 contract includes info on our new policies on structures (no structure may be taller than 4 feet.) and meeting attendance (all gardeners must attend at least 6 meetings in a calendar year.)

Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you then!

Meeting Recap

.
We are sorry to have missed you at the Crenshaw Community Garden monthly meeting.

At the October meeting we discussed general clean-up. Please come to the next meeting prepared for a work day. We will be clearing out the back-fence area.

It was also decided that come January, all structures over 4 feet tall that shade other plots, are unsafe or are obstructing gardens will have to be re-built.

It was decided unanimously that come January all gardeners will be required to attend a minimum of six meetings annually. If you are unable to attend due to work commitments, you are excused. Otherwise, in July of 2009 if a gardener has not attended three meetings they will be notified and will lose gardening privileges in 2010.

Thank you to everyone who did attend (9 of 32 gardeners). We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

Meeting Recap

GARDENERS:

We are sorry to have missed you at our September meeting.

We hope to see you at our next meeting. The meeting is always on the second Saturday of the month. Please make a note of it as we would love to see you and hear from you!

At our last meeting, after much discussion, it was decided by unanimous vote that after four written warnings about her plot, one of our gardeners has lost her garden privileges.

She has been asked to return her keys as soon as possible. We are not certain she will comply, and if not, the lock will be changed and new keys will be issued. We hope it does not come to this, as this is a major expense.

Also:

The city of Los Angeles is currently enforcing water regulations and you are notified that you are NOT permitted to water your plot between the hours of nine in the morning and four at night. There is a penalty for each infraction and we would hate to see any of our gardeners ticketed.

Please water wisely.

And please review your copy of the garden rules. We do not want to have to take any more plots away.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on October 11th at 10 am.

August Meeting Review

We are sorry we missed you at the August meeting of the Crenshaw Community Garden.

Here is a review of the topics discussed:

Crenshaw Community Garden
Monthly Meeting August 9, 2008

We distributed two plots - 12 1/2 went to Mohummad Houssan and 21 will now be occupied by Myeong Kim Soon.

The attendees of the meeting cleared the northern fence area which had become overgrown. Thank you to everyone for your help with this.

Ari Moon has been contacted regarding her neglected plot.

Soon Kim has agreed to clean up her plot within thirty days. Please assist her in any way you can.

Mr. Kim has agreed to remove the second bee hive that he placed in the garden. The current hive is thriving, but please always exercise caution when working in the area around the hive.

Pepperdine University will work on cleaning up the median area when they come out for their volunteer day.

As always, please turn off the water when you leave the garden, pick up any trash you may see and respect our space.

Thank you so much.

See you at the September meeting.

August Meeting

The August meeting of the Crenshaw Community Garden is today, August 9th at 10 am. All gardeners should try to attend.

See you there!

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

.
.
Our next meeting is on August 9th at 10am.

We will be giving out one plot. If you are interested, please make sure to attend.

We will also be discussing Pepperdine University's volunteer outreach offer and will decide what we would like to ask them to help with. Please come ready with suggestions.

ALSO: There is a second bee hive set up behind the compost pile. If this is your hive, it needs to be removed. We hardly have room enough for the first hive and cannot support a second colony. Thank you!

See you all at the next meeting!

July Meeting Notes

We were sorry to have missed you at the July meeting of the Crenshaw Community Garden. Please make sure to attend our next meeting on Saturday August 9, 2008 at 10 am.

From the meeting:

We have a website. www.crenshawgarden.blogspot.com If you would like to add anything to it please let me know!

Plot number 29 was assigned to new gardener. Please welcome him. This leaves one plot open (number 28) and our waiting list at four active people.

Gardeners may not have more than one plot. This is against garden rules and anyone who is using more than one plot must finish using their second (and third) plot by September 1st. If you know of any other gardeners using two plots please bring it up at the next meeting.

Please be courteous to other gardeners and make sure your plot and borders are clean. For those of you concerned a note is going to Soon Kim regarding this.

Pepperdine University would like to come to the garden for their annual community service day. We will discuss what they can do to help at our next meeting.

Please make sure your plants are not so tall that they start heavily shading other plots. This is also against garden rules.

Any gardener wishing to plant flowers is welcome to do so along the back fence where the fruit trees are or on the sidewalk median in the front.

Please pick up any trash you see when you are in the garden, and please pick up after yourselves!

Enjoy your gardens and we will see you all on Saturday August 9th at 10 am.

Thank you!

Next meeting July 12th, 2008

Our next meeting will be on July 12th at 10am in the garden. If you are interested in joining the garden, please stop by!

Mark Your Calendar: Next meeting June 14th, 2008

Our next garden meeting will be on the usual day and time...that is the second Saturday of the month at 10 a.m.

All gardeners should attend.

If you are interested in joining our garden, we also encourage you to come by.

During the last meeting we discussed the compost pile and all agreed it needs to be kept a bit neater. In an effort to do that, all gardeners should make sure to chop up their debris before adding it (large material takes a long, long time to break down!) and place it in the bins.

At the next meeting we will be working on the compost pile and doing a general clean up of the walk ways.

Can't wait to see you all then!
